 August 9, 2007 - The Florida Marlins/Florida State League Scholarship Committee awarded 11 educational scholarships of $1,500 on Friday, August 3rd. The committee made the awards after a review of the applications submitted by Florida State League teams. League President Chuck Murphy stated: "I have always felt this program is one of the most imporant things we do in the Florida State League," said league President Chuck Murphy. "I thank the Directors and General Managers for the support of this program."
The Florida Marlins have co-sponsored this program with the Florida State League the past eight years. Marlins Community Executive Director Nancy Olson plays a key role in the program and is clearly responsible for the success of this project. The Florida Marlins donated $10,000 to the program this year. Scholarships were raised from $1,000 to $1,500 for the first time in 2007.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be an employee, a child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club during the Florida State League Season, and must be at least a high school junior by the 2007 fall term.
Sarah Padove, a game operations intern with the Miracle this season, was a recipient of one of the scolarships this year. "We are very proud of Sarah for being chosen as one of the scholarship winners", said Miracle General Manager Steve Gliner. "This is a wonderful program, and we are very thankful to the Florida Marlins and the Florida State League for recognizing these students."
The winners will be guests of the Florida Marlins on Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Pro Player Stadium and will be recognized on the field in a pre-game ceremony. The game is at 1:05 p.m. against the San Francisco Giants.
